The 34ft. yacht "Carmargue" was twice knocked over by huge waves in the infamous 1979 Fastnet Race - The biggest disaster in Yachting history.
A force 10 South-Westerly gale hit the race off Land's End causing havoc and great loss of life.
Sea King and Wessex helicopters from RNAS Culdrose, Nimrod reconnaissance aircraft from RAF St Mawgan and Kinross, Lifeboats from Sennen, St Ives and St Mary's shipping and fishing boats all took part in the extensive rescue operations coordinated by Land's End Coastguard.
